Pay-as-you-go solar panels are proving a hit

HOME OWNERS will be able to avoid the initial cost of solar panels, and future electricity price rises, under a pay-as-you-go offering that has been a hit in the US. Private equity-backed Sungevity Australia, a partnership between Lismore solar installer Nickel Energy and San Francisco's Sungevity, will initially offer the product, called Roof Juice, in northern NSW and Queensland, and extend it nationally by the end of the year. In the US, the pay-as-you-go model has been a ''game changer'', Nickel director Nick Lake says, because it offers consumers immediate savings on their energy bill with no upfront cost. More than 40,000 homes...

NSW Government undermines election promise on renewable energy

Calls by the NSW Government to abondon Australia's 20 per cent Renewable Energy Target (RET) undermine a key state election commitment as well as putting billions of dollars of renewable energy investment at risk, the Clean Energy Council said today. Clean Energy Council acting Chief Executive Kane Thornton said the timing of NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher's comments this morning was strange, given IPART's price determination today showed renewable energy such as wind and solar would contribute nothing to the projected NSW power hikes for the coming year. "Page 3 of today's IPART report clearly states that 'green schemes' such as wind...

New CEC chief says households key to green energy

David Green, the newly appointed head of Australia’s peak renewable energy body, the Clean Energy Council, says some of his main priorities will be to focus on enhancing energy efficiency measures, distributed energy and consumer engagement about renewable energy technologies. “I want to focus on energy efficiency,” Green told RenewEconomy in an interview from London last night, his first in-depth interview since his appointment. “The second thing I want to do is to make sure there is a good consumer information program, so that they understand the journey we are on, and the importance and the opportunities of moving to a...

Love of a sunburnt country a boon for solar set

THE humble city of Dubbo has emerged as the solar power capital of Australia, with more than a quarter of the houses in one postcode generating their own electricity from rooftop panels. Even as subsidies are slashed, data shows the boom in photovoltaic solar panel continues. The breakdown of solar use by postcode shows a clear bias towards regional Australia and city suburbs with lower-than-average incomes, industry body the Clean Energy Council says. ''Solar panels are fast becoming the Hills Hoist of the 21st century,'' the council's acting chief executive, Kane Thornton, said.
