Renewables can "keep a lid on energy costs": CEC boss

Renewables can "keep a lid on energy costs": CEC boss

Renewable energy sources such as solar power could help keep a lid on Australia's energy costs in the face of a looming domestic gas supply crisis, a power and utilities conference has been told. Speaking at the conference in Sydney yesterday (May 22), the Clean Energy Council's Chief Executive David Green said Australia needed to invest in clean energy to maximise the economic potential for gas exports and ensure energy affordability for domestic users. "With a domestic supply crisis looming, gas prices are predicted to double or even triple within 10 years on the east coast of Australia. If we don't act...

Tasmania likely to lock-in solar tariff for three years

Tasmanian households that install solar power systems on their homes before the end of this year are likely to be able to lock in to the current feed-in tariff rate for at least three more years. Existing solar energy customers would also continue to be paid at the current tariff rate until January 1, 2017, if the recommendations of a Tasmanian Government issues paper are adopted. The issues paper proposes that all existing solar customers and new customers who are eligible for the solar power feed-in tariff by 1 January 2014 should continue to be paid the current feed-in tariff rate until...

Budget cuts could hamper renewable energy development: CEC

Budget cuts could hamper renewable energy development: CEC The development of cutting-edge renewable technologies in Australia is likely to be hampered by cuts made in the Federal Budget, according to the body representing the clean energy industry. More than $600 million of funding for clean energy projects had been put in jeopardy by Budget spending cuts, according to the Clean Energy Council (CEC). "A total of $370 million for the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) was sent into the budget ether, after it was established less than a year ago as an independent body to provide long-term stability to investors, and avoid this...

Project asks Australians to show support for solar power

A community project which aims to ensure the rights of solar owners are protected has been launched nationally today (May 14). Solar Citizens is an off-shoot of the community organisation known as "100% Renewable", which aims to help Australia move towards a renewable energy future. The project is non-partisan and independent of any political organisation or party. The Solar Citizens was launched by its Manager, Geoff Evans, on the Sunrise breakfast show on the Seven Network this morning. According to its...

Research team looks at solar for powering skyscrapers

Research team looks at solar for powering skyscrapers

A research team based in Melbourne has received $4 million grant funding for the development of a technology that could enable skyscrapers to be powered entirely by sunlight. Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology and the CSIRO will use funding provided through the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) to develop nanoplasmic solar cell technology. Specifically, they will create a small scale pilot project using the patented thin film solar technology known as NanoPlas. NanoPlas was developed at the Victoria-Suntech Advanced Solar Facility. It works by incorporating a thin layer of metallic nanoparticles into conventional thin film solar cells to effectively scatter light...
