Project asks Australians to show support for solar power

Project asks Australians to show support for solar power

A community project which aims to ensure the rights of solar owners are protected has been launched nationally today (May 14). Solar Citizens will also aim to encourage the adoption of solar power and wants to see Australia "put a panel on every rooftop." Solar Citizens is an off-shoot of the community organisation known as "100% Renewable", which aims to help Australia move towards a renewable energy future. The project is non-partisan and independent of any political organisation or party. The Solar Citizens was launched by its Manager, Geoff Evans, on the Sunrise breakfast show on the Seven Network this morning. According to its...

Research team looks at solar for powering skyscrapers

Research team looks at solar for powering skyscrapers

A research team based in Melbourne has received $4 million grant funding for the development of a technology that could enable skyscrapers to be powered entirely by sunlight. Researchers from Swinburne University of Technology and the CSIRO will use funding provided through the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) to develop nanoplasmic solar cell technology. Specifically, they will create a small scale pilot project using the patented thin film solar technology known as NanoPlas. NanoPlas was developed at the Victoria-Suntech Advanced Solar Facility. It works by incorporating a thin layer of metallic nanoparticles into conventional thin film solar cells to effectively scatter light...

Australian-first trial for 'hot rocks' power generation

Australian-first trial for 'hot rocks' power generation

A South Australian company has become the first in Australia to produce energy using geothermal 'hot rocks' technology. Geodynamics Limited has successfully commissioned its Habanero Pilot Plant in the Cooper Basin region of South Australia. The plant will use world-leading technology that has the potential to further build Australia's renewable energy resources, which already include hydro-electric, wind and solar power. The plant will use Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) technology, a type of geothermal energy that produces power by superheating water using hot rocks deep beneath the ground. The 1MW pilot plant will run for 100 days until August this year before its performance is...

Community calls for cut to $10bn government fossil fuel subsidies

Community calls for cut to $10bn government fossil fuel subsidies

Leading Australian environmental and community groups have signed a joint statement calling on the Australian Government to end fossil fuel subsidies, which cost taxpayers more than $10 billion per year. Signatories including the Australian Conservation Foundation, WWF and Greenpeace have called for the abolition of subsidies they claim create an uneven playing field that discriminates against renewable sources such as wind and solar energy. "If our politicians are serious about stopping climate change, they need to stop funding it. The first step is to end fossil fuel subsidies in this year's federal budget," the joint statement issued by more than 20 groups...

Rooftop solar can cut energy bills for all: new report

Rooftop solar can cut energy bills for all: new report

Rooftop solar energy systems could help reduce power bills even for homes which did not have them installed, according to a new report. The "Going Solar" report, by the Centre for Policy Development (CPD), found that recent debates around electricity prices and renewable energy policy have largely ignored the rapid drop in solar technology costs, and the cost and risks associated with a ‘business as usual' model. The analysis of the photovoltaic panels and subsidies shows the take-up of solar power helps to reduce the wholesale cost of all electricity.  Australia's current level of rooftop solar installations saved between $300 million and $670...
