Queensland budget's solar savings overlooked: Greens

Queensland budget's solar savings overlooked: Greens

The savings to the Queensland Budget that have resulted from residential solar power installation are being overlooked in the debate about feed-in tariffs, according to a Greens election candidate. There has been speculation about the future of feed in tariffs after Premier Campbell Newman called for debate on the issue and claimed that "the solar feed-in tariff situation is one that sees people with the financial means to pay for panels win at the expense of poorer households and disadvantaged people." However Charles Worringham, the Greens Candidate for Ryan, responded in an opinion piece for the Courier-Mail that the installation of solar...

Program to generate 150MW of renewable energy in regional and remote areas

Program to generate 150MW of renewable energy in regional and remote areas

A program to generate 150 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy sources in regional and remote locations is to be implemented within five years, according to Federal Resources and Energy Minister Gary Gray. The Industry Regional Australia's Renewables (RAR) program will support the development of renewable energy solutions, including hybrid and integrated systems in off-grid and fringe-of-grid locations across Australia. Mr Gray said at least two large-scale renewable energy plants of 10 MW or greater are expected to be built as part of the program. Sourcing energy from clean sources such as wind or solar power can have not only environmental, but also...

Renewable energy powering more of Australia than ever

Renewable energy powering more of Australia than ever

Renewable energy is supplying record amounts of electricity to Australian homes and businesses, new figures have revealed. The 2012 Clean Energy Australia Report released last week showed that renewables such as hydro, wind and solar energy supplied a record 13.14 per cent of Australia's electricity in 2012. The report also found that there was enough electricity generated by renewable sources during 2012 to power the equivalent of more than 4 million Australian homes. Clean Energy Council Chief Executive David Green said the report showed that energy efficiency and renewable energy was beginning to make a major difference to the way Australians produce and...

Queensland commits to maintaining solar feed-in rates

Queensland commits to maintaining solar feed-in rates

The Queensland Government has confirmed it will not be reducing the solar feed-in tariff for households who signed up to higher payment rates. Last year the State Government slashed its payment to people supplying power from solar panels back to the grid from 44 cents to eight-cents per kilowatt hour. But people who had already signed up to the scheme continue to be paid the 44-cent feed-in tariff for the solar energy they produce. Just two days after calling for a debate on the issue, Queensland Energy Minister Mark McArlde has confirmed the higher rate will continue to be paid. "The 44-cent feed-in tariff...

No additional levy for Queensland's solar homes

No additional levy for Queensland's solar homes

Queensland's residential solar power owners will not be charged an additional levy for the panels on their roofs. The Queensland Competition Authority (QCA), in its electricity price determination revealed on Friday May 31, has not supported the idea to levy an extra charge on solar energy producers. The decision is obviously very welcome news for the 750,000 Queenslanders who reside in homes where solar panels have been installed. "The QCA's rigorous and comprehensive analysis of power price rises in Queensland has made it clear that renewable energy was a much smaller contributor to electricity bills than most other factors," Clean Energy Council Chief...
