ACT cuts feed-in tariff and moves to net metering
The Australian Capital Territory is to follow in the lead of other Australian states by reducing the feed-in tariff it pays to households who connect to solar power. From 1 July 2013, all new ActewAGL solar connections will be paid on a net metering basis at just 7.5 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh). This compares to a rate of approximately 18 cents per kWh that has been paid under a gross metering arrangement. A program to generate 150 megawatts of electricity from renewable energy sources in regional and remote locations is to be implemented within five years, according to Federal Resources and Energy Minister Gary Gray. The Industry Regional Australia's Renewables (RAR) program will support the development of renewable energy solutions, including hybrid and integrated systems in off-grid and fringe-of-grid locations across Australia. The 2012 Clean Energy Australia Report released last week showed that renewables such as hydro, wind and solar energy supplied a record 13.14 per cent of Australia's electricity in 2012. The Queensland Government has confirmed it will not be reducing the solar feed-in tariff for households who signed up to higher payment rates. Last year the State Government slashed its payment to people supplying power from solar panels back to the grid from 44 cents to eight-cents per kilowatt hour.
